Cold Weather Policy
In some districts it is left to teacher judgment, while in others it is determined by a set temperature. Winston Elementary will use the combination of temperature and wind chill factor to determine whether or not students should participate in an outdoor recess. Teachers will use the following website, www.weather.com to access a “feels like” temperature reading for Winston, MO. The guidelines below will be followed. Also, in instances of inclement weather (as determined by teachers and staff) such as extraordinary rainfall or wind, heavy snowfall or freezing rain, students will be kept inside during recess.
Grades: K-3
Students will be kept in from recess whenever the "feels like" temperature is 32 degrees or
colder.
Grades: 4,5,6
Students will be kept in from recess whenever the “feels like” temperature is 20 degrees or colder.
Please prepare your child for the temperatures of a Missouri winter by dressing them properly with a heavy coat, hat, and gloves or mittens. We will encourage students to wear boots when it is snowing or there is snow on the ground. We don’t want children to have cold, wet feet all day. It is not conducive to learning. Students not dressed properly, as determined by their classroom teacher, will be allowed to stay in the homework room. Any student with a health concern that requires them to stay indoors, will stay in the homework room. After three days of indoor recess, classroom teachers will ask for a parent or doctor’s note
indicating the need to stay inside.
